IKEA recently launched a range of smart sensors and gadgets, and while the likes of the new color-change donut lamp are getting the most attention, a much more understated product stands out to me: the Bilresa smart switch.
Available individually or as a set of three, these aren’t standalone gadgets per se. Instead, they can be connected to a range of other smart products to let you control said products without having to go into an app. They offer a range of control options – there’s a version with a wheel you can click or scroll (to dim a smart bulb, for example) and a version that has two clickable buttons.
1. They mean you can go screenless
“There are situations when you don’t want to pick up your phone, open an app, and tap through menus to steer your smart product,” says David. “Physical control is quick and intuitive.”
The switches are designed as an alternative option for certain scenarios. David explains that he has a smart wake-up lamp next to his bed. In the mornings, it’s automated to mimic a sunrise, but in the evenings, he just uses a Bilresa switch. That means he doesn’t need to go on his phone.
“When I go to sleep, I just reach for the remote and dim it down into warmer light,” he says. “We have learned that this kind of interaction is just as appreciated by someone completely new to smart homes as it is for a more advanced user.”
2. They make smart home accessible
Smart switches are also ideal for people who don’t have access to an app. Say you have visitors or you live with someone who’s not terribly tech-savvy. With a smart switch, they’ll have a way to control the smart home gadgets they need access to.
“A remote is a shared way to interact, making the technology available to use for any family member or guest in your home,” comments David. “Apps are still individual.”
3. They’re ingeniously color-coded
You can pick up Bilresa switches individually, or as a pack of three remotes, in different colors. IKEA worked with Swedish designer and colorist Teklan on the specific shades, and ended up with a warm terracotta red, sandy beige and soft blue-green.
“Personally, I really like how we introduced some great colors on the remotes,” reflects David. “So they’re really small products, but they come with a lot of personality.”
The color isn’t just there to look nice, though. “The functional aspect is important and drove the decision,” shares David. “There might be several remotes in the same room or even the same location. Instead of using symbols or stickers, we know color is a great way of quickly identifying the right remote. Red for that ceiling light, while beige could be for triggering scenes, for instance.”
