FBI seizure of 2020 Georgia ballots rekindles fears of Trump retaliation over election loss


The remark went largely unnoticed amid the transatlantic whirlwind at the time. During his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21, Donald Trump announced that “people will soon be prosecuted for what they did,” referring to the alleged fraud during the 2020 presidential election, in which he was defeated by Joe Biden. One week later, federal agents from the FBI entered an official Fulton County building in the state of Georgia on Wednesday, January 28. They seized hundreds of boxes containing ballots from that period, as well as voter rolls.

The FBI is investigating alleged violations of federal law prohibiting the destruction of electoral records, as well as fraudulent entries on voter lists. As noted by the New York Times, the search warrant was signed by the acting prosecutor for the Eastern District of Missouri, which seems illogical, as there is no apparent connection to that state. Another detail attests to the extraordinary, highly politicized and abnormal nature of the operation: the presence of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
