Getting married in “Birks”? The idea is surprising, as American Danielle Frankel Hirsch readily admitted. The wedding dress designer, who in just a few years has become one of the most influential figures in the revival of bridal fashion, unveiled her first collaboration with the German shoe brand. In the United States, her reputation is well established: She has dressed pop culture icons such as Zoë Kravitz and Charli XCX, updating – far from any idealism – the codes of this most unique garment.
Founded in 2017 in New York, the Danielle Frankel fashion label prioritizes local production in the Garment District, Manhattan’s fashion hub. The designer selects satin, organza, chiffon, tulle, or beaded crochet, working them in layers or sheer overlays, often revealing the very structure of the garment itself. After the success of her first boutique on Melrose Place, an upscale neighborhood in Los Angeles, she is preparing to open a second salon this year in the heart of Tribeca, New York.
For a small collection developed by Birkenstock’s 1774 line – a creative laboratory in Paris responsible for all collaborations – Frankel Hirsch set out to reinterpret several iconic mule models using precious materials. This approach marries her poetic, couture aesthetic with the functional legacy of the German manufacturer. It also marks another step in the cultural turnaround of these once-derided German sandals.
