Ann Droid is a new BBC sitcom created by and starring Diane Morgan, best known for her roles as Philomena Cunk and Mandy, as well as projects like Motherland and After Life. Now, she brings her impeccable comic timing to a sci-fi family series and potentially another memorable character in Linda.
An-Droid – a clever pun – kicks off when widow Sue’s son, Michael, gifts her a second-hand robot carer, Linda, played by Morgan, to help her live independently. Although Sue is initially hesitant to accept the robot into her home, Linda’s unusual charm ultimately helps the pair develop an unexpected bond, despite her obvious lack of helpfulness.
In addition to Morgan’s trademark deadpan humor, the series also aims to explore serious themes of aging, loneliness, and grief, as well as the growing impact of modern technology and AI in everyday life.
“I definitely think we’ll have robots looking after us in the future. Whether they’ll end up killing us or not I can’t say,” said Morgan when asked about her thoughts on AI robots.
