French president Nicolas Sarkozy welcomes Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to the Elysée Palace, Paris, December 10, 2007.

Nicolas Sarkozy is back in court. Definitively convicted a few weeks ago in a corruption and influence-peddling case, the former French president has been on trial since January 6 in the case of the alleged Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign. He is charged with “passive corruption, criminal conspiracy, illegal financing of an electoral campaign and concealment of misappropriation of Libyan public funds.”

In addition to Sarkozy, there are 12 defendants, including three of his former ministers – Brice Hortefeux, Claude Guéant and Eric Woerth – and two businessmen suspected of acting as intermediaries – Ziad Takieddine and Alexandre Djouhri. The trial is scheduled to run until April 10.
