There have been many fan-made HD-2D Pokémon concepts, but now Gen1Recomp and DramaticShapeVoxelMod bring that idea closer to reality. Created by bryanthaboi, Gen1Recomp is a native LÖVE recreation of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow with some modern features like higher refresh rates, faster speeds, and mod support. Unlike a traditional emulator, it uses the ROM data to rebuild the game in its own software.
DramaticShapeVoxelMod is a new mod for Gen1Recomp that transforms the original games into a voxel world, from towns and routes to battles. The developer says it’s still a work in progress, so you can expect some unfinished or rough-looking effects for now. To try it out, you’ll need the latest Gen1Recomp release and a US ROM of Pokémon Red, Blue, or Yellow.
