Israel is the target of a campaign orchestrated by Hamas, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the United Nations (UN), and the international media. This was what Benjamin Netanyahu’s government claimed in response to the extremely serious accusations of famine made by experts from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a consortium of NGOs and international agencies under the UN, in a report released on Friday, August 22.
The Gaza Strip has been under Israeli fire for more than 22 months and is now experiencing a major food crisis, according to the IPC. The finding confirms numerous accounts from residents, Palestinian journalists, healthcare workers, and humanitarian personnel in the enclave. As of August 15, the IPC reported that just over 500,000 Gazans, primarily in the northern part of the territory, were experiencing famine, which is characterized by extreme malnutrition, misery, and death.
“Famine is a race against time. An immediate ceasefire and end to the conflict is critical to enabling an unimpeded, large-scale humanitarian response to save lives,” IPC experts wrote in a report from August 22, painting a picture of a catastrophic situation, even as food and medical supplies are available just a few kilometers from the Palestinian territory.
