The US bombings of Iranian nuclear sites during the night of Saturday, June 21, to Sunday, June 22, place European leaders in an impossible position. None condemned the American president’s decision to join the Israeli strikes, but this move ran counter to, and even highlighted the futility of, their recent diplomatic initiatives aimed at preventing such an escalation.
After the strikes, Europeans fear the risk of an even more serious escalation in the Middle East, though some experts believe that Tehran might now lack the capability to retaliate. “We urge Iran not to take any further action that could destabilize the region,” declared Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in a joint statement on Sunday afternoon. “We will continue our joint diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions and ensure the conflict does not intensify and spread further.”
