France faces Irish challenge in tournament opener

The label on a T-shirt is meant to be discreetly tucked away inside the collar, or at most, peek out unobtrusively. That sartorial rule does not seem to apply to the French men’s rugby jersey, 2026 edition. Ahead of their Six Nations opener on Thursday, February 5, against Ireland at the Stade de France, the French team has found itself repeatedly branded as the “favorites” by their opponents, a label that only adds to the pressure already on their shoulders.

“It’s great that we have so many fans and that there are such high expectations,” joked Fabien Galthié, the French head coach, on Tuesday as he announced his team lineup – and dismissed his rivals’ comments as “bar talk.” Having already led France through six Six Nations tournaments – and played in nine as a player – the coach knows exactly how tough the challenge will be for his players, as well as the opportunity this edition represents.

As the defending Six Nations champions, Les Bleus now have the chance to win back-to-back titles for the first time since 2006-2007. The schedule is in their favor, with three home games (Ireland, Italy, England) and only two away fixtures (Wales, Scotland). The Irish, winners in 2023 and 2024, present an appetizing opening challenge, yet with their squad aging, hit by injuries and off-form players, the boys in green seem somewhat faded as they arrive at the Stade de France.
