Friends and relatives of French journalist detained in Algeria cling to hope

Amid the silence surrounding French Journalist Christophe Gleizes, who has been detained in Algeria since late June 2025, every statement has been closely scrutinized. When they were heard by the Assemblée Nationale’s Foreign Affairs Committee on January 21, Gleizes’ mother and stepfather reminded the lawmakers that he was “keeping his spirits up despite a difficult detention, marked by isolation, the inability to call friends and relatives, irregular access to mail and limited visits, restricted to 30 minutes every two weeks, behind a glass partition,” according to a statement released after the hearing.

Gleizes, a journalist for the So Press media group (So Foot, Society, etc.), had traveled to Algeria to report on Jeunesse Sportive de Kabylie (JSK), the major football club in the Algerian city of Tizi Ouzou. Thursday, January 29, marked the start of his seventh month of detention in the city’s prison, where he is serving a seven-year sentence for “advocating terrorism” and “possessing publications with the goal of propaganda harmful to the national interest.” The Algerian authorities have accused him of conducting interviews with individuals linked to the Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabylie, which Algiers has classified as a terrorist organization since 2021.
