Searching for middle road, Bournazel rules out alliances

With one month to go before the Paris mayoral election, Pierre-Yves Bournazel shows no intention of straying from the line he set for himself more than a year ago. Running for Paris City Hall under the banners of the center-right Horizons and centrist Renaissance parties, and polling third in all surveys, the city councillor from the 18th arrondissement describes himself as “persistent” and confident about the vote on March 15 and 22.

Despite calls from senior conservatives, the close ally of former prime minister Edouard Philippe continues to rule out forming a second-round alliance with Rachida Dati, the right-wing candidate from Les Républicains (LR) endorsed by the centrist MoDem, a party allied with Macron. He also rejects any rapprochement with Emmanuel Grégoire, the Socialist leading a left-wing alliance.

The day before his first campaign rally, on Tuesday, February 10, Bournazel defended this position in an interview with Le Monde: “I am not running to fall in line, but to win. Like the majority of Parisians, I am not resigned to having to choose between the outgoing majority that has failed and an opposition that would take us backwards. Like them, I say neither Dati nor Grégoire.”
