Tsunami warnings were heard in several northern and eastern coastal cities in Japan after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the Russian coast on Wednesday, July 30. “Residents in regions where warnings have been issued should immediately evacuate to safe locations such as elevated areas or evacuation buildings,” said Japanese government spokesperson Yoshimasa Hayashi.
The Japanese warning covered the entire northern and eastern coastline of the archipelago, extending as far south as Osaka and including the small surrounding islands. The tsunami could reach heights of up to 1 meter beyond these areas.
