We’re all pretty used to 3D being a major part of everyday life: it’s in manufacturing, healthcare, retail, and, of course, entertainment. But sometimes, getting a look behind the scenes at how it’s applied can be very fascinating, and even a little amusing.

Inio Asano, the renowned Japanese manga artist behind Goodnight Punpun, Solanin, and other emotional and often dark stories, recently showcased an entire rural town he built in 3D specifically to help create a one-shot manga. The fact that he managed to build such a detailed and lived-in environment in just a month is crazy, and at this point, it almost makes you wonder: should Asano try making a game instead of a manga?

There doesn’t seem to be information about this project yet, and as the artist himself admitted, he hasn’t even written the manuscript. However, he did reveal that he has been using 3D since Mujina into the Deep, with modeling done in Blender and everything else handled in Unreal Engine. Asano purchases whatever assets he can find and creates anything that isn’t already available himself.
